About Miyajima, a World Cultural Heritage Site

Miyajima is a small island, just 28 kilometers around, and a part of Seto Inland Sea National Park. It has been prosperous as one of the oldest waterfront sites in Japan, and greets over 3 million people annually.
Miyajima is one of the three most scenic places in Japan, with its combination of historical cultural properties and beautiful natural environment. Don't miss it!

Various religious ceremonies and events are practiced throughout the year on Miyajima, whose name is said to have been derived from the legend that a god reached the island and was enshrined there.
Visitors to the island can either watch or participate in religious ceremonies and ‘Noh’ plays offered by Itsukushima Shrine, Daishoin Temple or Daiganji Temple, and other festivals held around Miyajima Pier.
