Sightseeing - Sites on Miyajima


 

The following is an introduction to the main sites on Miyajima. We hope it may be of assistance for planning your stay.

Itsukushima Shrine (15 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

Itsukushima Shrine is said to have been built in 593 B.C.
The main buildings of the shrine preserve the architectural style of the 12th century, called “Shinden Zukuri”, and are connected by a corridor 4 meters wide and 275 meters long.
The shrine is illuminated until 23:00, and many people enjoy walking around it after sunset."

Torii Gate (15 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

An important cultural monument, the gate is 16 meters tall and 23.3 meters wide. It has 2 columns and four supporting posts. The columns are made of camphor tree trunks of circumference 9.9 meters.
The present torii is the eighth, and was built in 1875.
You can walk though the gate twice daily, at low tide.

Houseboat Cruise Mikasamaru (one minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

Worshippers traditionally approached Itsukushima Shrine from the sea.
Now you can too, by cruising with Houseboat Mikasamaru III through the torii gate.
Reservation is recommended as this is a popular activity.
n.b. Occasionally the boat cannot go through the gate, depending on the depth of the water.

Five-storied Pagoda (15 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

17.6 meters tall, this important cultural monument represents a combination of Chinese and Japanese architectural styles. The five roofs are Hikawabuki (thatched cypress).

Treasure Hall (25 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

Some of Isukushima Shrine’s treasures, such as Heike Nokyo (scrolls), golden armor, swords and spears, and costumes for ‘Noh’ play are on display here.

Miyajima Aquarium (30 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

The aquarium is closed for renovation, and will reopen in August 2011.

Momijidani Park (30 minute walk from Kinsui Villa)

There are about 200 maple trees in this park.

You can enjoy their refreshing green leaves from spring to summer, and beautiful red and yellow leaves from mid to late November.

Cable Car (40 minute walk to the Momijidani station from Kinsui Villa)

The cable car takes you to the top of Mt. Misen, from where you can see Shikoku island in the distance on a clear day. The leisurely ride reveals a breathtakingly scenic panorama of the island-dotted Seto Inland Sea.
It takes 30 minutes from Momijidani Station to Shisiiwa Station, and then a 40 minute walk to the summit.
Please check the website as sometimes the cable car may not be running, owing to strong wind or maintenance.
